TVpad old models 1,2 and 3 not working anymore starting 1 January 2016 (even after DNS change)

TVpad old models 1,2 and 3 not working anymore starting 1 January 2016 (even after DNS change)

It seems that the old TVpad models 1,2 and 3 are permanently not going to work anymore starting 1 January 2016 after I have talked to the customer service (even after DNS change). At the moment, it already does not work anymore, at least on my TVpad 1 and TVpad2 model.

They want you to upgrade to TVpad4 model for a special price of 169 US Dollar using the MAC number of your old TVpad model, but personally I am not going to upgrade to TVpad4. The risk is just too high at the moment given the lawsuit against TVpad. Who knows how long the TVpad4 will work and are they doing the same to TVpad4 when they introduce TVpad5 or TVpad6.

My plan at the moment is just using an Android Box and a VPN subscription. Personnally, I think that is the future if you want to watch Chinese TV (Cantonese or Mandarin) content, Korean or Japanese TV content (drama's, etc) with Chinese subtitles if you are living overseas. There are Android apps that offers Chinese TV content (live or video on demand), some of these apps you do have to pay and some are free, but these free apps work not so well.

I am not really considering other TV boxes that offers the same kind of function as the TVpad at the moment, because these TV boxes might be the next target. I know there are at least several TV boxes that offers TV channels from Hong Kong and China.

I do consider TV boxes that offers video's on demand content (Chinese, Korean and Japanese TV drama's, movies, variety shows with Chinese subtitles) with region restriction. So, TV boxes that have official license agreements with the content holders. Normally, this means you can't watch these video's if you live outside that country/region. However, with VPN subscription you can bypass that restriction. It is basically the same as with Netflix US. People outside the US are using a VPN subscription or other method to watch TV content from Netflix US. Netflix US has much more TV content compared to Netflix in other countries.

There are numerous TV boxes sold in China that offers these TV content. I think I will buy some of these TV boxes and test them.

Let me know in the comments below what you think of this situation. Are you going to upgrade to TVpad4?

  1. I have a TVpad 3 which has not worked since October 2015. I totally agree with you to upgrade is to waste our money. A VPN subscription may be a choice than buying a TV box. There are of high risks to you TVPad or similar TV boxes.

  6. Thabks for your update. It is nice to know what is happening when we have had so many problems in the past few months. I agree with you too that it is too risky to invest in an upgrade since the company is so unreliable.

  7. HTV2 or HTV2 is good. You can watch everything from Hong Kong as well as from
    China.

  8. @Stanley Yee: I have heard about that TV Box and some other TV boxes in the past. Not sure though how long these TV boxes will work, especially since these TV boxes might be the next target after TVpad.

It just showing the company will close down very soon.

  11. If tvpad is forcing their existing customers to upgrade to tvpad4, that's mean the company is closing down very very soon.

  13. i dont think you need any tvbox for watching tv dramas or movies as you can easily BT them. TV box are mainly for watching live tv from other countries so if your purpose are tv dramas, movies dont buy anything.

  15. @Unknown: I do now plenty of people buying these TV boxes mainly for the video on demand service. Because of time difference, they can't watch it live.

Personally, I think most people have bought the TVpad for their parents (first generation), because they usually don't know much about using computers/laptops. If they do know how to use the computer, they didn't need to buy the TVpad in the first place, because as you have said, tv drama, movies, hk news, etc can be easily be downloaded without any ads.

  16. @Michel Lee, if your purpose is mainly using the video on demand service, then a simple Android TV Box is enough, it will only costs you around 40-50 US Dollars (worldwide shipped) from Chinese resellers webshops and you just have to install the various Google apps. I will make a blog post soon about it.

  18. It will be the same for Korean content? And if not, how can I watch it again? The DNS 49X is not working for me anymore.

  19. Do not waste the time and money to upgrade to tvpad 4. We do not know how long it will last. If you think they have successfully shut down 1-3 and not doing anything about 4, then you are wrong! It is just a matter of time.

  21. My tvpad3 stopped working since January 3rd. Is it true that tvpad 1-3 are now useless box unless we sign up for the subscription? Does anyone owned a tvpad 1-3 that is still working without subscription? If so, appreciate if you could post your solution. Many thanks. .
